The answer is Yes, in many cases, you do. According to California Vehicle Code, you must file an accident report, called the SR-1 form, with the DMV within 10 days if the crash involved any of the following:

  • Injury to any person (no matter how minor)
  • Death
  • Property damage totaling over $1,000

The requirement applies regardless of who was at fault and even if the crash was minor.

Failing to file a SR-1 form can have consequences. Need help understanding your legal obligations after a car accident in California? Call 818-858-5315 for a free consultation with a trusted California personal injury lawyer.
